Know Your Bike Rights
News from the New York Bicycling Coalition
Thanks to funding from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC) offers a wealth of resources to help both cyclists and drivers navigate the roads safely. Whether you're looking to become a more confident cyclist or better understand how to share the road with those on bikes, in cars, and on foot, we’ve got you covered.
Do you know when a cyclist has the legal right to take the full lane? The key things to teach your child about how to ride responsibly on a multi-use trail? How should you position yourself to turn left safely at a busy intersection? What’s the safest way to cross railroad tracks? And how about signaling—are you doing it correctly? If you’ve ever wondered about these situations, we have videos that break it all down! Our website is your starting point for videos an all the NYBC safety eduction resources. In addition to videos, we have quick-read "safety shorts," and we also offer free printed materials that organizations can use to educate cyclists and drivers alike. Our website hosts a variety of resources about New York’s Bike Laws, especially the relatively recent laws about e-bikes.
If you know of a school, community group, or other organization that could benefit from our printed Bicycle Safety Pocket Guides and other materials—available in English and Spanish, with Arabic coming later this year—please send them our way! For materials and more information, contact us at safety@nybc.net.
You can also reach out to Anne Savage, NYBC Executive Director, at nybc@nybc.net, and we’ll help connect you with the resources you need to stay safe on the road.
Let’s work together to make New York’s streets and trails safer for everyone!
The New York Bicycling Coalition is the only statewide organization focused primarily on cycling. Our unique role is to unite, inspire, and support the New York cycling community and to provide a cohesive voice for people who ride bikes across New York State. We work closely with the New York Safe Streets Coalition to advocate for safe streets for everyone in New York.
